Every football fan has yelled at the TV about a draft pick. NFL GM games are where you find out if you would have done any better. You run the draft, fight for free agents, juggle the salary cap, and live with every decision for years.
I build football management games, and I play everyone else's too. This list is short on purpose: three pro football GM games worth your time in 2026, starting with mine. I'll tell you where each one falls short, mine included.
Quick note: none of these are official NFL games, but that doesn't mean you're stuck with made-up teams. Pro Football Coach 27 lets you import fan-made rosters and leagues, so you can run a franchise with real teams and players.
1. Winning Tradition: Pro Football Coach 27
Platform: iPhone, iPad, Android (PC on Steam in the works) | Price: Free to download (optional in-app purchase)
This is my game, so take the ranking with that in mind. But I built it because every other game on this list made me give something up.
Pocket GM 3 and Football GM put you in the front office and stop there. Pro Football Coach 27 makes you the GM and the head coach at once. You scout prospects at the combine and on scouting missions, weigh their potential and gem or bust odds, then run a live 7-round draft. In free agency you bid against CPU teams in live auctions instead of just tapping sign. Then you manage contracts, the franchise tag, the salary cap and dead money, and make trades under the cap.
Game day is where it splits from the pack. You watch every snap on the field and call the plays yourself: on key downs, on offense, on both sides of the ball, or let your coordinators handle it. Coordinators have their own traits, and you earn coach perks as you level up over a 30-year career.
The small stuff adds up too. You call your players to keep the locker room together, training sessions and camps develop your roster, and player faces age over a career. There's a Hall of Fame, league records and the Pro Bowl. Cloud saves and global coaching rankings mean your career goes with you, and you can see how you stack up against other coaches.
If you also play College Football Coach 27, you can export a draft class from your college career and import it into your pro league, so the players you recruited show up in your draft.
Want real teams? The Creation Suite, an optional in-app purchase, lets you edit everything in your league and import fan-made rosters, leagues and draft classes. Load a community roster with real teams and players and start your career from there.
What it does well: GM and head coach in one game. Live draft and free agency auctions. Real play calling on game day. Fan-made rosters with real teams through the Creation Suite. A 30-year career with coach progression. Free to download.
Where it falls short: The Steam version isn't out yet, so for now it's phone and tablet only. And if you only want to run the front office, you can hand game day to your coordinators, but the game is built around doing both.

2. Pocket GM 3: Football Sim
Platform: iPhone | Price: $2.99
Pocket GM 3 is the pure front-office game. You're the general manager, full stop. You hire coaches, scouts and physios, each with their own traits and schemes, then draft, sign, release and trade players to build your roster. Games play out in a play-by-play sim while you track your key players' stats.
It's made by a solo developer, and that shows in a good way. It sits at 4.9 stars on the App Store from thousands of ratings, which is hard to argue with.
The catch is that it's iPhone only, and you never coach a game yourself. If you want to call plays or make adjustments on game day, this isn't that game.
What it does well: Deep roster building. Staff with real traits and schemes. Cheap.
Where it falls short: iPhone only, with no Android version. No play calling or game-day coaching.
3. Football GM
Platform: Web browser (computer, phone or tablet) | Price: Free
Football GM is the spreadsheet lover's pick, and I mean that as a compliment. It runs in your browser, it's free with no microtransactions, and you don't need an account. You run the roster, re-sign veterans, plan your cap space, trade picks, sign free agents and work the draft.
Where it goes deeper than most is the numbers. There's a finance side where you set ticket prices and budgets, advanced team and player stats, a historical stat search, and as many leagues as you want. Legends end up in the Hall of Fame. It comes from the same developer as Basketball GM, so if you've played that, you already know the feel.
The trade-off is presentation. It's tables and box scores, and you don't call plays. Whether that sounds like heaven or homework will tell you if it's for you.
What it does well: Free with no microtransactions. Plays anywhere with a browser. Deep stats and finances. Unlimited leagues.
Where it falls short: No play calling. Very text and table heavy.
So which one should you play?
If you want the purest front-office game on your iPhone, Pocket GM 3 is a great few bucks. If you want something free you can open in any browser and lose a weekend to stats, Football GM is excellent.
But if you want to be the GM and the head coach, draft your guys, win the free agency bidding war, and then call the plays on Sunday, that's the game I built. Pro Football Coach 27 is free on iPhone, iPad and Android, and you can see everything it does here.
